Saffron Walden Walks

Walk 6 - By Grimsditch Wood

DESCRIPTION

This gently undulating walk is in peaceful countryside to the north of the parish. There are no roads or stiles as it's entirely along footpaths (mostly waymarked) surrounded by trees, hedgerows, open farmland and ancient woodland.

DIRECTIONS

Turn right out of the car park and then right again passing the fisherman's pond on your left. At the end of the concrete turn right and follow thw fingerposted bridle way. At the trees the path turns left, then right across a bridge and left again between trees and bushes. After 600 yards a waymark directs you right across an open cultivated field to a clump of trees.

Cross the bridge and follow the narrow winding path through the trees to an old metal fingerpost. Turn right here and at the end of the field turn left and follow the path with a hedge on your right. It soon gives way to Grimsditch Wood. Beyond the wood the path turns left with a hedge on the right. Turn right through a waymarked gap downhill across a field and pick up a reinstated path. Cross the concrete track and go round a pit on your left before joining Byrds Farm Lane.

Turn right and quite soon turn left and follow the waymarked path uphill across and open field to point A on the map. Here we join the Harcamlow Way. Cross the path and go straight ahead across another open field with a solitary oak tree in the middle, to Ten Acre Wood. Cross the track to headland path with the wood on your right. Turn left at the end of the field and go down to its corner. Cross a plank bridge hidden in the bushes and follow the path with a hedge on the left. Beyond the hedge, bear left and follow the path with a hedge on the left. Beyond the hedge, bear left and follow the track up to Butlers Barn, point B on the map. Here we leave the Harcamlow Way.

Turn sharp left in front of the barns and join a wide grassy path between high hedges. After 400 yards turn left along a similar wide grassy path between tress and hedges. After another 400 yards turn right. this leads you back to the concrete track and Little Walden Road. Turn left to the car park.
