DESCRIPTION This lovely country walk close to Saffron Walden town, follows the valley of the Fulfen. It includes Beechy Ride and Thieves Corner. There are no stiles.
DIRECTIONS
Leave the car park with the pavillion on your right. Cross the grass to the barriers in the hedge opposite. Go down the steps and through Plantation, then turn left into Debden Road. Cross the road carefully and turn right. Turn left along Seven Devils Lane. After the houses, the path goes ahead between hedges. When the right hand hedge finishes, continue with the hedge on your left and houses on your right. Keeping above Newport Road, pass Blacklands Close and on to Rowntree Way. Cross Newport Road crefully. Turn right and then left into Beeches Close, keeping to the right. Turn right past number 26 as indicated by finger post, follow the path to Wenden Road. Turn left down the road, crossing the Fulfen. At the bend by a finger post, turn left along a wide track towards Beechy Ride. Soon the stream goes under a track and is now on your right. Just before the tall trees, turn right over the stream and immediately left along the narrow path between beech trees. At Newport Road, cross carefully to finger post opposite and continue along Beechy Ride. After the last beech tree, the official path goes straight ahead to a ford among the trees. As this is sometimes impassable you may wish to use this alternative route. Bear left on to a path with the stream to your left and cross the low bridge. Turn right and continue with the stream on your right toward a wooded area known as Thieves Corner. The path turns sharply to the left and goes across a vast open cultivated area to Debden Road. Cross the road carefully and turn right to the finger post on the next bend. Turn left uphill between open fields. At the top turn left and then right to Herberts. Turn left along a gravel track and when the track turns left, leave it and go straight ahead through the gap in the hedge. Turn left and walk round the playing fields with the hedge on the left and pitches on the right, back to the car park.
