Saffron Walden Walks

Walk 3 - Burntwood End Walk

DESCRIPTION

This delightful walk in Little Walden is gently undulating. There are leafy lanes, open field paths, streams and several ponds. One road has to be crossed (twice) and there are no stiles.

DIRECTIONS

From the car park, cross the road carefully, turn right and passing the Crown Public House go straight ahead along Petts Lane. After passing the houses there are open fields on the left and a row of trees on the right. Follow the route turning left through open gates marked "Home Farm". Pass the farm and other dwellings and on along the tree lined route to Burntwood End. After passing the house on your left, the route swings left and then right with trees still on you left. Turn sharp right through an avenue of horse chestnut trees. Cross the bridge and continue between the hedges. Go straight ahead to Park Farm. After passing barns on the right turn right through the farm. Opposite a "Private - no right of way" sign, turn right beside an ivy-covered wall.

Turn sharp left across an open field. The long path takes you to Ravenstock Farm where it becomes a lane. Between the farm house and Rancie Green Bungalow is point A where you have a choice.

For the shorter walk turn right down the open field. Go through the hedge and following the farmers waymarks, turn left and then right and so back to Petts Lane. Turn left and walk down to Little Walden Road. Cross the road carefully and return to the car park.

For the main walk continue down the lane to Little Walden Road. Cross the road carefully to the finger post opposite. Follow the path across open field, crossing the bridge. At the fence turn left and follow it round to grassy track, turn right passing Sadlers and Cloptons. Turn right across a two-plank bridge in the hedge and follow the path across open field. At the finger post turn right and follow the track down to the village. Turn left back to the car park.
